TOPIC #1

PREDICTABLY IRRATIONAL

The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions. By Dan Ariely.

Why people make bad decisions, yet make them in systematic ways.

Read a review The emerging field that Ariely hopes to make a formal

discipline at Duke is something called Behavioral Economics — the

merger of mathematically pristine economic theory with the messy

lust and greed of actual human nature. The field seeks nothing less

than to understand why investors, employees and customers

sometimes make ridiculous choices. See Dan’s very short video:

Theory vs. Reality

(wait 10 seconds for video to download, then click the start

arrow in the lower left corner on the control panel)

TOPIC #2

YOUR ETHICAL CHOICES

What kind of ethical choices are you forced to make every day?

Are some ethical situations less important than others? What

counts as an ethical dilemma? What isn’t worth considering?

VERY SHORT LIST____________________________________

Kurt Andersen (Studio 360)

and his Very Short List

Kurt's Bio

Very Short List (VSL) is a free, daily e-mail that points to excellent new (and sometimes vintage) entertainment and media that haven’t been hyped to within an inch of their lives. Each weekday, we tell our subscribers about a single recommended gem from among the vast pile of feature films and documentaries (in theatres and on DVD), television shows, novels, nonfiction books, magazine articles, Websites and services, CDs, radio programs, and more. The focus is on products that really deserve attention but haven’t already been subject to giant media pile-ons.

Or, to put it another way: We write about things we’ve discovered that please us so much that we can’t wait to tell other people about them. (All of our daily e-mails are archived HERE, by the way.)

Very Short List was founded in 2006 by Kurt Andersen, Simon Dumenco, Michael Jackson, Tim Nolan, Emily Oberman, and Bonnie Siegler. It is funded by IAC/InterActiveCorp.

VP, BRUCE FOWLER'S SAILING PICTURES_________________

Take a look at Bruce's recent sailing trip to the islands! He put together a great, color-coded map showing where each photo was taken. Be sure to find the photo of Bruce holding a "local" beer (I think it did touch his lips), and of him snorkeling.
